The European Artificial Intelligence Act ("AI Act") : What you need to know
A brief introduction to the new legal framework for AI in the EU
The AI Act, adopted by the European Council and the European Parliament on 13 June 2024, is the world’s first legislation specifically governing artificial intelligence. This act aims to establish a uniform framework to ensure reliable, ethical, and transparent AI systems. It seeks to promote innovation while protecting the fundamental rights of European citizens, positioning the EU as a leader in ethical AI regulation. These new regulations will directly affect businesses operating within the EU, whether they are providers (i.e. those developing the systems), users (the so-called “deployers”), importers, distributors, or manufacturers of AI systems.
