Doing business in Romania

A NATO (admitted 2004) and EU (admitted 2007) member situated in Eastern Europe, Romania has strong prospects of economic recovery, after passing through a political crisis owed to a flawed presidential
election campaign.

Romania finally achieved full Schengen member status in January 2025, which meant the elimination of checks at all borders but tighter restrictions on employers and foreign employees, and new provisions for foreign employees. Romania’s negotiations with the OECD look more favourable since our last review, and it is thought that membership will occur in 2026 or 2027 – a fact that would bring changes to key aspects of doing business,
trade and corporate governance.

A semi-presidential, bicameral parliamentary republic, Romania is the largest country in south-eastern Europe and the 12th largest in Europe, covering an area of 238,397 square kilometres (92,046 sq. mi).
