Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

1. Is my company required to be audited in Singapore?

In Singapore, companies are generally required to have their financial statements audited annually unless they qualify for an audit exemption under the Singapore Companies Act (Cap.50).

2. When must a new company appoint an auditor in Singapore?

Under the Singapore Companies Act, unless a company qualifies for audit exemption, an auditor must be appointed within three months from the date of incorporation as part of its audit and assurance obligations. Failure to appoint an auditor within the prescribed timeline may result in regulatory non-compliance and potential enforcement action.

3. What is a statutory audit?

A statutory audit is an independent examination of a business’s financial statements that is mandated by law to ensure adherence to the Singapore Companies Act and applicable accounting standards.

4. What is the Singapore Companies Act requirement for audit?

Under the Singapore Companies Act, companies are required to have their financial statements audited annually by a public accountant registered with the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA), unless they qualify for the small company audit exemption , in which case auditor services may not be required. Companies that are audit-exempt are still required to prepare financial statements and comply with the relevant statutory filing requirements.

5. What documents are required for an audit in Singapore?

  • Key financial records and supporting documents, such as:
  • Trial balance and general ledger
  • Financial statements (profit and loss, balance sheet, cash flows)
  • Bank statements and reconciliations
  • Fixed asset schedules
