Strengthening Singapore's asset management ecosystem: insights on MAS's latest competitiveness measures.

In this article, Chan Xue Pei, Partner at Forvis Mazars in Singapore, shares her perspectives as featured in Nikkei Veritas on how the latest MAS measures could shape the future of Singapore's asset management landscape, particularly for alternative investment managers, fund sponsors and investment professionals.

As global financial centres intensify efforts to attract investment professionals, Singapore has announced a new package of measures aimed at reinforcing its position as a leading asset management hub.

The initiatives introduced by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) on 19 August 2026 comprises of three pillars:

  • A tax exemption for qualifying profit-related returns arising from the provision of fund management services to Singapore-based qualifying funds that satisfy existing economic substance requirements. [mas.gov.sg]
  • A new hedge fund investment programme designed to encourage leading hedge fund managers to establish or expand their presence in Singapore. [mas.gov.sg]
  • A new investment management track under the ONE Pass framework to attract top global investment professionals and leaders to Singapore.

In a recent interview with Nikkei Veritas, Chan Xue Pei, Tax partner, noted that the tax exemption for performance-linked remuneration is expected to be particularly attractive to professionals in alternative investment sectors.

"The measure is likely to attract the interest of senior professionals and investment managers in alternative asset classes such as private equity, venture capital and hedge funds."

Commenting on the broader policy direction, Xue Pei observed that the new measures appear focused on enhancing the overall strength and resilience of Singapore's asset management ecosystem rather than solely attracting additional capital inflows.

"These policies are likely to be aimed less at attracting more capital to Singapore than at strengthening the asset management ecosystem."

As competition for asset management talent continues to grow across key financial centres including Hong Kong and Dubai, Singapore's latest initiatives underscore its commitment to fostering a robust, sustainable and globally competitive investment management sector.
