A day in the life of an HR & Payroll consultant, with Denisa Călin, Senior HR & Payroll Consultant

What is the first thing you do to prepare for a day of work?  

The first thing I do to get ready for a day at work is have a cup of coffee. After that, I check my emails and set my priorities for the day in order to have a clear perspective on what I’m dealing with.  

Take us through your tasks and responsibilities!  

My tasks and responsibilities cover a wide range of projects for clients in different industries. Firstly, I collect and centralise all payroll supporting information. We talk about timesheets, medical and holiday leaves, salary changes, bonuses, meal tickets, benefits in kind, new entries, leavers and many more.  

Then, when it comes to salaries, I record all the information in the HR payroll system, I prepare the payment orders, taxes and social contributions, including working with various online banking systems. I also make sure that the monthly payroll statements are prepared on time and the pay slips are sent to employees.  

I draft employment contracts, addenda, decisions and certificates required by employees as well as submit the employment documents, amendments and termination documents to the authorities.  

I am also responsible for preparing and submitting the 112-tax return in due time.  

Team meetings or one-to-one chats, how do you stay up to date with your team?  

Both! We use our team meetings to discuss and debate broader topics of general interest and we keep in touch with each other through our one-to-one monthly chats, where we discuss specific issues in detail.  

What is your afternoon pick-me-up of choice?  

One more cup of coffee is always a good idea. As I mentioned, I love coffee and I am more of a coffee drinker than a tea lover, so when I need a boost of energy, this is my go-to.  

How do you like to end a productive day at work?  

With no tasks left pending, that’s the ideal scenario. 

But I think you can categorise a day as productive when, at the end of it you can say I did everything I set out to do today, or at least, I did everything in my power to do so. It seems to me that achieving your goals, even a part of them, is the one thing that will give you a sense of satisfaction.

Is it too millennial, definitely! I would use something more casual or just pick up where we left off in the conversation.  

How many times did you look at someone’s Teams background and wonder if that is their real home?  

Never, but I see how that can happen. 😄 

And finally, what is the best sign off to an email?  

Have a lovely weekend might be the best one, as that would imply the work week is done and ahead of us are two days of relaxation.
