Behavioural red flags of a fraudster

Fraud rarely occurs without warning, though its signs are often overlooked. Individuals committing organisational fraud frequently exhibit behavioural changes that serve as early indicators of potential misconduct.
Recognising these red flags is crucial for early detection and prevention.

According to the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners’ (ACFE) 2024 Report to the Nations, 84% of occupational fraud cases involved perpetrators displaying at least one suspicious behaviour, with over half showing multiple red flags. These cues, while subtle, can signal deeper issues when observed together or over time.

While these signs may seem harmless in isolation, their persistence or combination warrants closer scrutiny. Organisations can mitigate risks by training employees to recognize these behaviours and fostering a culture of vigilance.
