The report, Modelling the future burden of RSV in older adults in Ireland, explores three potential scenarios for RSV-related demand among people aged 65 and over. It was launched at Pfizer’s Well into the Future symposium, which brought together policymakers, healthcare professionals and advocates for older people to discuss how Ireland can prepare for an ageing population.

The research highlights the pressure that RSV already places on hospitals and the potential impact on winter capacity. In the report’s central scenario, annual acute hospital bed use attributable to RSV among older adults rises from approximately 18,734 bed days in 2025 to 23,975 by 2031. Almost two-thirds of projected RSV-related bed demand is concentrated within a 10-week period each winter.

This research indicates that the burden is likely to grow as the population ages, particularly among adults aged 80 and over, who experience higher rates of severe illness and longer hospital stays.
“The findings show that the impact of RSV is not limited to the number of hospital admissions. Its effect on bed occupancy, particularly during the winter respiratory virus season, will be an increasingly important consideration for the health service in the years ahead.”

The report concludes that RSV is likely to become an increasingly important contributor to hospital demand and winter capacity pressures in Ireland. While the modelling is subject to uncertainty, its findings indicate that the future burden will be characterised not only by increasing hospitalisations, but also by growing demand for acute hospital capacity, with the greatest impact concentrated among adults aged 80 and over.
