Can you share what your role involves and what this next step in your career means for your day-to-day work?
As an Audit Assistant Manager, my role involves overseeing audit engagements from planning through to completion, managing client relationships, reviewing work completed by team members and ensuring audits are delivered to a high standard and within deadlines. A significant part of my role is also supporting and developing junior team members, helping them build confidence and technical expertise as they progress in their own careers.
This promotion is an exciting next step and reflects my career progression within the firm. My role now involves a stronger focus on leading engagements, mentoring colleagues and helping to guide projects from start to finish while working closely with clients and senior leadership. What I enjoy most is the opportunity to support others in their development while continuing to learn and grow myself.
Looking back to your first day at Forvis Mazars, what would surprise that version of yourself most about where you are today?
I think the thing that would surprise me most is the amount of responsibility and confidence I have gained over the years. When I first joined James Byrne & Company, prior to its merger with Forvis Mazars, I was focused on learning the fundamentals of accounting and building my technical knowledge. The idea of managing engagements, leading teams and acting as a key point of contact for clients would have felt quite daunting at the time.
What would also surprise me is how much I've enjoyed the people side of the role. While technical skills are incredibly important, I have learned that building relationships with clients and colleagues, supporting team members and working collaboratively are just as rewarding.
Was there a particular moment, project or piece of advice that helped shape your career journey and prepare you for this next step?
Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work on a variety of challenging engagements that have helped develop both my technical and leadership skills. Taking ownership of larger and more complex audits pushed me to think beyond the individual tasks and focus on the bigger picture, from planning and risk assessment to managing deadlines and client expectations.
One piece of advice that has always stayed with me is to never be afraid to ask questions and seek support when needed. When I first joined, I put a lot of pressure on myself to have all the answers. With experience, I've come to appreciate that learning from colleagues, sharing ideas and being open to feedback are some of the most important parts of professional growth. That approach has helped me build confidence over the years and has supported my progression to where I am today.
Who has had the biggest influence on your career growth, and what is one piece of advice from them that has stayed with you?
I have been fortunate to work with many supportive colleagues and leaders throughout my time with the firm, all of whom have contributed to my development in different ways. The managers and partners I have worked with have consistently encouraged me to take on new challenges and trust my abilities.
One piece of advice that has always stayed with me is that everything is a learning curve. Starting out, it was reassuring to be reminded that no one is expected to know everything from the outset and that every new challenge presents an opportunity to learn and develop. That mindset has helped me embrace new responsibilities and view setbacks as valuable learning experiences. It is something I continue to carry with me in my day-to-day work and personal life.
If someone new joined the Cork office tomorrow, what would you tell them about the team, culture and opportunities available here?
I would tell them that they are joining a team that is incredibly supportive, welcoming and collaborative. One of the things that makes the Cork office special is people's willingness at every level to help one another. Whether you're starting your career or taking the next step, there is always someone willing to share their knowledge and support your development.
As a new, growing office in Cork City, there are great opportunities available. There is strong encouragement to take ownership of your career, gain exposure to a wide range of industries and clients, and continue learning both technically and professionally. If you are willing to get involved, ask questions and embrace new challenges, there are many opportunities to grow and progress within the firm.
Outside of work, what's something people might be surprised to learn about you or a hobby that helps you switch off and recharge?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends and making the most of any opportunity to switch off and recharge. As audit can be a busy and fast-paced job, maintaining a good work-life balance is important to me. I particularly enjoy getting outdoors for a walk with my dog, which I find is a great way to clear my mind and unwind.
