The EU Artificial Intelligence Act has entered a critical phase in 2026, marking the shift from regulatory preparation to active compliance and enforcement. While the Act came into force in August 2024 and initial obligations began to apply in 2025, 2 December 2027 is the key milestone when the majority of requirements become applicable to organisations using AI systems.
The 2027 milestone sits within a broader phased rollout of the legislation. Earlier obligations—including the prohibition of certain high-risk uses of AI and the requirement to promote AI literacy—have applied since February 2025, followed by governance and general-purpose AI rules from August 2025.
