Draft ministerial regulation to increase unemployment benefits

The Thai Cabinet has officially approved a Draft Ministerial Regulation on Criteria and Rates for Unemployment Benefits, as proposed by the Ministry of Labour. This regulation aims to provide greater financial support to those experiencing unemployment. The draft has been reviewed by the Office of the Council of State and will be passed into law soon.

Key objectives and changes:

The primary purpose of this new regulation is to increase the rate of unemployment benefits for insured individuals who have been laid off. The core changes are as follows:

  • Increased benefit rate: Under current regulations, insured persons who are laid off receive unemployment benefits at a rate of 50% of their daily wage. This new Draft Ministerial Regulation will increase the rate to 60% of their daily wage.
  • Duration of benefits: Insured persons will continue to be entitled to such benefits for a maximum of 180 days per claim.

The decision to raise the benefit rate stems from the recognition that the previous amount may no longer be adequate to cover the essential living expenses of insured persons. The increase aims to ensure that these benefits provide more sufficient and timely support.
