Breakout sessions

Earning well, living well, building wealth (Lydia Gibson, Financial Planning, Forvis Mazars)
Good earnings don’t automatically translate into long‑term financial security. This session explores how you can take control of your financial future - setting clear objectives, using tax‑efficient savings beyond pensions, and striking a healthy balance between planning ahead and enjoying today. We’ll cover how to build good financial habits early, manage uncertainty, and make confident decisions that adapt as your career and life evolve.
Client creation masterclass for lawyers (Graham Smith, Disputes and Investigations at Forvis Mazars)
In this session, Graham will introduce the 4-Step Framework from his Client Creation Masterclass, deigned to support solicitors and barristers to create long-term client relationships that lead to instructions. Over his 24 year career, Graham has worked at three of the UK's leading sets of chambers as a barristers clerk, launched a coaching and consulting business to support barristers and solicitors with client creation and career advancement, and is currently the Business Development Lead in the Disputes and Investigations team at Forvis Mazars.
Learnings from the landmark Autonomy case: A Forensic Accounting Masterclass (James Fox, Disputes and Investigations, Forvis Mazars)
Our forensic accounting expert witnesses explain what makes expert evidence persuasive in high‑value accounting disputes and what typically gets attacked. Drawing on our 2017-2024 involvement in the landmark Autonomy case, we will bring the issues to life by outlining the accounting themes most commonly at the heart of fraud and negligence claims including revenue recognition, capitalisation policies, and allegedly misleading reporting.
AI in private practice: Practical tools, ethical guardrails & what clients now expect (Evin Kutlay – Cyber, Forvis Mazars and Aimee Mullan, Signature Litigation)
As AI is rapidly adopted across law firms, this session gives junior lawyers practical, up‑to‑date guidance on how to use AI in private practice today. We will explore real-world use cases alongside the key professional and ethical risks, including confidentiality, data protection and accuracy, and will provide a high-level overview of emerging AI regulation and shifting client expectations in an AI‑driven environment. Drawing on Evin’s experience as an AI Consultant and dual‑qualified lawyer, the session translates complex AI risk, regulatory and governance concepts into clear, immediately usable takeaways.
Staying SANE as a lawyer (Dr Catherine Sykes, Psychologist and coach for lawyers)
Many high-performing lawyers don’t burn out because they lack resilience. They burn out because the psychological systems that support sustainable performance quietly erode under chronic pressure. Dr Catherine Sykes will introduce her SANE model (Safety, Agency, Narrative, Emotional-flexibility), a practical, psychologically grounded way of understanding what actually helps lawyers stay well and perform at a high level over time. This model is not about mindset hacks or “doing more self-care.” It’s about understanding the internal capacities that are often missing, especially in high-stakes, high-visibility legal environments.
The ESG risks lawyers should know about (Benn Hogan, Sustainability Services, Forvis Mazars)
Many organisations have ESG policies and public commitments — fewer have the evidence, governance and supply-chain visibility to back them up when challenged, or when subject to due diligence in the course of M&A activity. This session demystifies ESG due diligence from a real-world consulting perspective, focusing on the risks lawyers are most likely to encounter in practice. We’ll look at recurring gaps and how these can translate into risks for your clients.
EMEA energy & infrastructure outlook (Bob Green, UK Head of Energy and Infrastructure, Forvis Mazars and Karishma Merchant, Energy & Infrastructure, Forvis Mazars)

In this session, our Energy & Infrastructure specialists will share practical insights drawn from advising on major energy, infrastructure and project finance transactions globally. We will focus on key issues observed in project documentation—particularly facility and broader project finance agreements—including areas that commonly give rise to negotiation challenges, disputes and residual risk.

The session will also examine legal and commercial considerations at the end of the asset lifecycle, including the handback of PFI assets, alongside valuation challenges associated with late‑life infrastructure and energy assets, such as during decommissioning and transition phases. In this context, we will highlight why traditional valuation approaches may be insufficient and discuss alternative considerations relevant to these scenarios.

Through real‑world examples, junior lawyers will gain a clearer understanding of the interplay between legal drafting, financial structuring and valuation, and how these factors underpin risk allocation and outcomes across the project lifecycle.
