FAQs
Why act now? - Complying with regulations like the EU AI Act
The European Union Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, known as the EU AI Act (EU AIA), came into force in August 2024 and has necessitated the need to accelerate AI governance for many organisations. The EU AIA is a groundbreaking regulatory framework designed to ensure the safe and ethical use of AI technologies. It will reshape how companies deploy AI, not just within the EU, but globally.
Although the UK is no longer part of the EU, the Act's extraterritorial reach means that UK businesses using AI systems that impact the EU market must comply with its provisions. Some provisions of the Act are already in effect, such as the prohibition of AI deemed to have an unacceptable level of risk, for example, emotion detection in the workplace, while the majority of other obligations will become due in August 2026. Companies must ensure their AI systems comply with stringent standards for high-risk systems to operate within the EU. Non-compliance could lead to hefty penalties of up to 7% of annual turnover or €35m and significant reputational damage.
Why Act Now? - The need to realise the value of AI
Boards are under more pressure than ever to navigate the complexities of the rapidly evolving AI technology and regulatory landscapes while realising value.
Despite significant investments in AI experimentation, particularly in generative AI, many organisations have struggled to scale pilots and achieve the anticipated benefits. Core reasons for this include:
- Lack of governance over selected AI use cases for pilots.
- Unavailability of high-quality, accurate data for training AI systems.
- Insufficient understanding of what constitutes success in addressing challenges through AI.
- Pilot programs yielding biased or discriminatory outcomes that hinder progress.
- Poor stakeholder engagement stemming from a lack of trust in AI systems.
It is widely recognised that responsibly built and well-governed AI not only performs better but also fosters better stakeholder engagement and results in a higher return on investment. Thus, implementing right-sized AI governance is increasingly becoming a catalyst for innovation.
Furthermore, AI amplifies existing risks such as cybersecurity and third-party risks, while introducing new risks related to bias and the inability to explain outcomes. As we advance towards agentic AI, the challenges of accountability and transparency will intensify, making it essential to establish robust AI governance foundations now.
How we deliver our AI health check
We conduct a focused four-hour workshop involving key stakeholders from various organisational levels, supplemented by targeted one-on-one discussions and a top-level review of relevant documentation to evaluate current maturity.
The resulting report provides a concise overview of maturity across essential AI domains, highlighting core strengths and gaps, along with prioritised next steps and a tailored roadmap aligned with the EU AI Act or other pertinent frameworks. We engage closely with business stakeholders to validate insights and collaboratively develop a high-level plan grounded in strategic priorities and tailored to the organisation's risk profile.
