| What is the charity you are a trustee for, what do they do, and what inspired you to get involved? |
Tourettes Action is a charity that supports those with Tourettes and their families. Tourettes is still a very stigmatised condition, and the media portrayal of it often reinforces stereotypes that are not representative of the reality. I applied to be a trustee at the charity after diagnosis within my own family, this sparked a passion in me to support a charity that was invaluable to us. I wanted to find a way to contribute to the work being done by Tourettes Action to support those with Tourettes feel able to be themselves, and be more seen and accepted for who they are. |
| What is the best part of being a trustee? |
Working with the board who all who come with different perspectives and bring varied experiences but with us all caring so deeply about a shared purpose. Everyone who is a trustee has some connection to the condition and that same spark and passion to create a world where those with Tourettes can be accepted and thrive for who they are. I have enjoyed building connections with individuals who I would not meet through the course of my day job, and working collaboratively with them to support the charity to run to its full potential, as well as meet people who all understand the lived experience of me and my family. I enjoy being able to leverage skills I learn in my role at Forvis Mazars and prior experience to benefit the charity such as DEI input as well as general HR knowledge, it is a huge privilege to play a part in shaping decisions for a cause I care about so deeply and that impacts my everyday. |
| What are some of the challenges? |
| It can be hard to find the time to give the role as much as attention as I would like to but having done the role for nearly three years, I have learnt that all the trustees face similar challenges, and the focus is on contributing when you can. |
| What would you say to anyone thinking of becoming a trustee? |
| Go for it! Everyone has something to add, we all have life experiences and perspectives that are so invaluable and taking on a role for something you care about is very fulfilling. You are also likely to meet some amazing people along the way! |
