| What is the charity you are a trustee for, what do they do, and what inspired you to get involved? |
I am a trustee of Esteem Foundation and prior to full registration of the charity, I had opportunity to support the main trustee board by providing food and other essential items to vulnerable and struggling families affected by cost-of-living crisis etc in the community. It was a chance to shape the future of a cause that I care about, also use my skills for good, and amplify the voices of those who need support the most. It’s one of the most meaningful ways to give back. Esteem Foundation mission is to create positive social impact and foster a sense of community through compassionate action and sustainable initiatives. We provide a range of support to individuals and families in Southwark facing adversity such as poverty and insecurity. |
| What is the best part of being a trustee? |
Being a trustee supporting vulnerable members of the community living in poverty in London can be deeply rewarding. I’ve had the opportunity to directly influence the lives of people who are struggling. I have gained an insight into complex social issues like poverty, homelessness, food insecurity, and mental health. This exposure can deepen your understanding of systemic challenges and enhance your leadership, governance, and strategic thinking skills. Seeing people gain independence and dignity is incredibly fulfilling, and I enjoy working alongside other trustees and volunteers who are equally committed to social justice. I have provided guidance on financial management, governance and leadership, which has helped our charity to grow sustainably and launch new programmes. |
| What would you say to anyone thinking of becoming a trustee? |
| You don't need to be an expert as charities need a mix of perspectives. You will learn a lot and it's a great way to grow yourself personally and professionally. Although it is a commitment, it is a great way to give back to your community so you should go for it! |
| What are some of the challenges? |
At a small charity it can be tricky balancing strategic oversight with operational boundaries - Trustees must focus on governance and strategy, not day-to-day operations. Ensuring the charity has enough funding to meet its goals often in the face of limited resources and increasing demand can be a real challenge and it is important to keep up to date with the various laws and regulations. Trustees must identify and mitigate risks, including financial, reputational, operational, and especially safeguarding risks, when working with vulnerable people. At times the role can be demanding, especially during crises or major transitions, and balancing trustee duties with personal and professional responsibilities is a challenge. At the Esteem Foundation, we have to also respond to external pressures like rising poverty, housing insecurity, or changes in government policy. This requires agility and a deep understanding of the community’s evolving needs. |
